7 Card Stud Poker Rules

7 card stud poker is a game played used to be played with friends rather than competitively. You'll find 7 card stud games available on many sites, so they are getting a bit more popular and easier to find. The game is played a little bit different than Texas hold em and Omaha but the winning hands are still the same!

  1. All the antes are place; the antes are decided before the game begins.

  2. Your two face cards are dealt face down, and then a third is dealt face up, this is called the "third street" or the "door card"

  3. There is a round of betting. At some poker rooms, the player with the lowest valued 'door card' must bet first - called the 'bring in bet' otherwise high card bets.

  4. Next comes the "fourth street", this is the second face up card that you are dealt.

  5. Again another round of betting takes place with the highest ranking hand betting first.

  6. The "fifth street" is the next card to be dealt face up again.

  7. There is a round of betting but the minimum and maximum bets are sometimes doubled in this round.

  8. Now the "sixth street" card is dealt and the bets are placed, still keeping to the higher bets from the previous round.

  9. The "seventh street", which is the final card is then placed face down; it is also known as the river card. Again another round of betting takes place.

Betting Note: With Texas Hold'em and Omahagames, all the betting is started by the player on the left of the dealer, but with 7 card stud it is the player with the highest showing hand for that round who starts of the betting.

Another variation on 7 Card Stud is 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, played much the same but with a split pot for low hand. If you like 7 Card Stud, you might also enjoy 5 Card Stud.
