Online Poker Tournaments

Live Poker Tournaments are the best way to replicate that World Series of Poker intensity. Most tournaments operate by charging a buy-in and a fee, you often see the fees listed like this: “$6+$1” - which $6 of your fees go toward the prize pot and $1 is paid as a commission/rake to the poker room.

After the players have bought-in to the game, each player is seated at the table and each receives the same number of chips. One the tournment starts, it's like poker at a regular side/ring game, except limits increase every 10 to 30 minutes or each time the buck circles the table. These limit increases help to eliminat players. The last player takes 50% or more of the prize pot at single table tourneys.

Quick Review:

  • Most tournaments increase the betting limits in each round to speed up the tournament, so read their specific rules before starting for details.

  • Most tournaments don't charge a rake fee on tournament games, so make sure you don't play where they do.

Here's a list of some great daily poker tournaments you might want to try:

* Single table means that if you take all the chips at your (single) table, you win.

** Multi Table, means that there is more than one table involved in the tournament, and therefore more people. In a multi-table tournament, as people run out of chips and drop out, they merge tables until there is one player left - the winner.

*** Some poker rooms run both single and multi table games, either concurrently or at different times.

In addition to smaller daily/weekly/monthly tournaments, some poker rooms like Party Poker host very large events, including qualifying rounds for the "Party Poker Millions" tournaments, with huge prizes for those that work their way up.
